Does leather/suede come from animals that slaughtered for meat? or are they killed just for the leather?

Accordingly with my views, there are a large number of animals slaughtered daily for meat. In india it accounts for about 100,000 cattle per day. So I don't think that there is a need to slaughter animals only for leather.
